Physical activity and school-related social factors

This study examines whether schools which participated the Finnish Schools on the Move programme’s pilot phase 2010-2012 succeeded in their efforts to increase physical activity in the school setting. Especially the changes in students’ physical activity and the associations with school-related social factors, such as peer relationships and school climate, are investigated. In addition, we evaluate the factors behind the success and challenges in the local projects in enhancing physical activity in the school setting.

The goal of this study is to examine whether students’ perceived school-related social factors could be improved by participation in physical activities especially in the school setting, and thereby to promote students’ engagement and learning in schools. Decision-makers, teachers and others working within the school sector can take advantage of these results in developing students’ equal possibilities to feeling comfortable in schools and having a physically active lifestyle.
